As united members of one nation, it is each citizen’s duty to defend the ideology of the nation, even when such duties conflict with the ideology of one particular faction. Those in positions of power, therefore, are not barred from such patriotic expectations; quite to the contrary, they are held to a higher standard of upholding the best interests of the nation. The integrity of the United States’ Representative Democracy depends upon those in power fulfilling this responsibility to maintain honest and unadulterated communication with the public, regardless of the potential consequences. Unfortunately, elected individuals sometimes choose to prioritize their own partisan aspirations at the expense of justice. The Benghazi cover up illustrates the formation of a tyranny of consensus through the intentional, concerted effort on the part of the federal government to deceive the American people after a fatal attack on the United States consulate at Benghazi, Libya. Regardless of evident negligence on the part of the administration, the collective attempt to manipulate the facts in order to preserve the integrity of the administration prior to the presidential election shows a blatant disregard for the unalienable rights of the public. As the events that transpired in Benghazi slowly become manifest before the public, the role of the tyranny of consensus in manipulating public opinion becomes increasingly evident.
The federal government ardently and knowingly undermined the enormity of the Benghazi attacks by asserting that they were a protest to an offensive video, instead of the fatal acts of terrorism which they are now indisputably believed to be. The rhetoric of consensus is embodied by Susan Rice, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, through her endorsement of this ideology which was edited by the intelligence community to omit Al Qaeda’s role in the attacks. This not only illustrates the manipulative nature of the tyranny of consensus, but shows the complicity of the various groups that bought into its ideology in order to uphold the integrity of the administration.
In failing to objectively report to the American people the events transpiring in Benghazi as they unfolded, the media perpetuated the tyranny of consensus. The tragic fact that four brave Americans lost their lives in an attack that could have been prevented by the attentiveness of the federal government highlights the prioritization of the reputation of the administration over the protection of the American people. In failing to acknowledge the attacks as the acts of terrorism that they were, the president denied the families of the American casualties eligibility for specific combat related benefits, which further shows a disregard for the victims’ justice. The kangaroo court in The Crucible similarly aimed to maintain its own power at the expense of justice for those it left in its wake.
Ultimately, the collaborative effort on the part of the federal government of the United States to deceive the American people clearly demonstrates an attack on the liberty of the American citizens. In the formation of a tyranny of consensus to preserve the dignity of the administration, the federal government breached its duty to be forthright with its citizens above all else, especially partisan goals. In doing so, the ideology of the nation was compromised, thus the sacred consensus of the American people was rendered defenseless against the oppressive nature of the federal government.
