Drugs Take Control
Over More than Just the Body
Throughout history, there were always dictators in some form or manner that exerted a tyranny over their fellow kinsmen and were unstoppable in their conquests. These dictators are still very much alive today in another form, and some of the most prominent are the drug cartels of Mexico. Nobody in the country attempts to or is unable to stop them as they sell illegal drugs because the ones who do are tortured and killed. Officials are unable to do anything because they are afraid of the cartels and the insane violence of their territories. It is a tyranny of consensus as fear drives the majority into doing nothing about their plight, and it has taken many lives in its lifespan.
One of these tragic losses was Maria Santos Gorrostieta, a former Mexican mayor killed a week ago. Before she was killed, she was kidnapped in broad daylight in front of people that did not raise a finger to assist her. They let the tyranny of consensus continue on its path of destruction without a single pause. And this was not the first time the cartels aimed at her. Maria has dealt with numerous attempts of murder against her yet nothing was done to help her. Her husband was even killed in the first attempt, and nothing happened. There was another murder attempt a year later, and still nothing happened. When the people refuse to do anything to aid Maria’s plight in fear of becoming the next victims, it is quite evident the tyranny has an iron grip on these people. This situation is very similar to Proctor’s refusal to do anything about the tyranny of consensus of the witchcraft trials when he could clearly see that people were dying as a result of the court’s tyrannical actions in the Crucible. People only care about saving themselves, and in their attempts to preserve themselves, have created this horrible tyranny of consensus. As a result, Maria would turn into another statistic and another victim of this tyranny.
Yet she is not the only one who has died. Many people have become the victims of drug cartels over the past few years in this chaotic drug war. This is the result of a tyranny of consensus that was allowed to grow without anybody to stop it in its early stages when it was the most vulnerable. Despite attempts by authorities, notably the past Mexican president Felipe Calderon, to stop this tyranny in the past years, evidently it is still thriving. It has been six years since the war was declared on drugs, and there is no significant change. This tyranny of consensus has taken root, and now cannot be stopped by individuals who are only now realizing their errors. This tyranny will last for a long time, and with no end in sight. It will continue to consume lives in its rampage, unless somebody comes along of high regard in the community and acts as a sacrifice to stop the tyranny. Perhaps Maria will change things. Her story was all over the media, so perhaps she became the martyr Mexico needs in order to save itself, just like Proctor and Rebecca Nurse caused the downfall of the tyranny of the witchcraft trials in The Crucible because of their deaths.
