In general, when people choose to associate themselves with a particular group, these individuals cling closely to this group's ideals in order to remain accepted. However, often it is seen that when individuals remain too close to the ideals of the consensus, major crisis can occur as a result, such as in The Crucible. This play demonstrates these qualities because as court officials remain rooted in their puritanical ideals to remain in power, innocent people suffer as a result. America's current fiscal cliff situation is the modern day example of this due to the way that disaster is looming over the common people as a result of lead politicians, Obama and Boehner, being afraid to lose acceptance by reaching outside of their parties' ideals. The fiscal cliff issue is being caused by the government's inability to compromise to create an approved budget plan, so when many of our current policies expire, economic trauma will engulf the nation's current recovery. America's fiscal cliff situation is a looming disaster that is resulting from politicians staying rooted to the ideals of political party consensuses in order to remain powerful, but meanwhile the common people have no control and will be the ones to suffer.
If a budget agreement is not reached, the new year will bring Americans tax increases, slashed government spending, crippled businesses, and lower incomes. While the Democrats, led by President Obama, want to raise the taxes for the wealthy and create an extension to the payroll tax cut, the Republicans, led by House Speaker Boehner, refuse to agree to these conditions. As this political indecision is causing tension between parties, the tension is causing a fear that prevents these leaders from swaying their political ideals in fear of losing power and acceptance from their party. The lack of improvement in creating an accepted compromise leaves Americans as the victims of this pending ruthless economic spiral, despite the fact that they have no control over the situation.
This demonstrates how conforming to original ideas due to fear can cause mass suffering, such as in The Crucible when Danforth decides not to postpone any hangings even though it causes innocent people to suffer. Danforth's decision to conform to the court in order to maintain his power despite the court's wrongdoings ultimately keeps the vicious cycle of witch hangings in full swing. Both politicians, but especially Boehner, can be related closely to Danforth, due to the way that Boehner has reverted back to conforming to the conservatives' stubborn desires after being harshly criticized for giving up some of their ideals in his opening budget offer. This conformation is causing difficulty regarding compromise, which will cause helpless Americans to suffer as a result. In the play, Danforth's power helps to drive the consensus until one brave soul finally went against what was expected of him to ultimately end the crisis. Similarly, this nation will not be freed from this looming disaster without a John Proctor, an individual who is willing to make a little sacrifice in order to put an end to the potential disaster.
This situation could drive America into yet another economic recession, despite the fact that recovery from the previous struggle with a recession is still occurring. The strong pull of political ideals in America is causing politicians to act in a way that completely opposes their job, which is supposed to be to improve conditions for the common people. The results of strict conforming will ultimately cause consequences far greater than the small sacrifice required of these politicians to merely sacrifice some ideals for the good of the nation.
