Poet Linda Gregg was born in New York in 1942 and raised in Marin County, California. Many years later, she received both her Bachelor of Arts and her Master of Arts from San Francisco State College. After receiving her degrees, Gregg proceeded to teach at the University of Iowa, University of California Berkley, and Princeton University. She has also been awarded many grants, from the National Endowment for the Arts and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Lannan Literary Foundation. She is best known for her ability to write lyrical poetry that’s often admired for its power to discuss grief, desire and longing, with craftsmanship and poise.
Gregg has written many books, The Sacraments of Desire, Too Bright to See, Chosen by the Lion, In the Middle Distance, and Things and Flesh. All of her poetry books have many of the same reoccurring themes. Linda Gregg is praised for writing about the immense grief in our world, because after all, it all does come to an end. She utilizes death and other tragedies in her writing to show there can be great things after great loss, tragedy or death. She believes that even after the worst possible catastrophe, some good always comes out of loss.
After writing her most famous book of poetry, The Sacraments of Desire, Gregg said “It is crucial that a poet see when she or he is not looking - just as she must write when she is not writing. To write just because the poet wants to write is natural, but to learn to see is a blessing. The art of finding in poetry is the art of marrying the sacred to the world, the invisible to the human”. Linda Gregg certainly accomplishes just this in her poems. She learns to see the infinite beauty in the world while still feeling all of her pain and suffering.
Now Gregg spends much of her free time writing poetry and traveling the world. Many of her poems are about her discoveries in other countries and lifestyles. She doesn’t have one place she calls home, Gregg believes where ever she is, and where ever the world takes her, she’s in paradise. Her free spirit is what has sustained her as a major modern poet in the pass, and continuing on.
