Troy's construction of the fence goes deeper than a desire to surround his home. What do you think the purpose of the fence is? Could it be to build a barrier between his family and the rest of the world? Considering he's unhappy with the way his life panned out, do you think he feels threatened by the world? Could the fence be a way to keep others out, or could it be to protect what Troy has left?

In the novel, it is questioned whether or not the fence is wanted by Rose to keep the ones she loves in or the rest of the world out. I personally think it is both because of the way that she is able to keep her husband in despite his disloyalty and affairs that could cause him to leave. Although, this can be argued because of the way that Cory gets away from the family. It can also be said that the fence is to keep the bad things in the world out, such as racism and discrimination. This is overall an opinion question and each side has a valid argument.
