Bercovitch established that the Puritans used religion to create order in the wild New World. So, religion creates order and control. When I read Fences, I saw that Troy Maxon always referred to the Devil when he is faced with an immense problem. For example, when Cory rebels and leaves the house, Troy just says that he is "ready" for the Devil. This use of the Devil when faced with immense stress is Troy's method of control. Troy uses religion to control himself and retain order in the form of the "Devil".
