For a majority of the play, I feel like Troy is holding Corey back, especially when he tells Corey's coach not to send the recruiter. But in the end, Corey became a Marine, and Rose was saying that it was all thanks to Troy.
Did Troy actually help Corey/prepare him for the world?

I think Troy's desire for Cory to improve in life is a large theme in this book. On page 97 Rose says, " Your daddy wanted you to be everything he wasn't...and at the same time he tried to make you into everything he was." I think Troy is responsible for Cory's joining of the marines. Cory left in great frustration with his father and obviously needed to find a place to go. Though it is not included in the book, I think the marines is the place where Cory found his new home once he left.

I believe that Troy tried to show Corey the hardships of the world and that there were no free handouts. Troy wasn't trying to hurt Corey even though he ruined his football career. Rose says, "He meant to do more good then he meant to do harm. He wasn't always right." (97) This shows that even Rose knew that Troy was trying to help Corey because he saw how his baseball career became nothing and he didn't want the same for Corey. Because of how he treated Corey made Corey stronger and prepared him for the world and joining the marines.
