Taylor Mali is an advantageous modern poet from the Big Apple with a background in teaching and a voice that is unsurpassed in the spoken word circuit. He has received degrees from Bowdoin College and Kansas State University. Mali comes from a family with roots in writing and the arts. His mother was award winning children’s writer Jane L. Mali and his great-great-grandfather was the founding member of the Metropolitan Arts Museum in New York, John Taylor Johnston. Taylor Mali Spent nine years teaching and taught not only English but math, and history as well. In 2000 Mali’s love for teaching came to fruition with a project to create one thousand new teachers through poetry, persuasion, perseverance, and passion” and his goal was reached April 1st 2012. Taylor Mali has written two books of poetry, What Learning Leaves and The Last Time As We Are, and he wrote a book on teaching entitled, What Teachers Make: In Praise of the Greatest Job in the World. He has done multiple audio CDs and Voice-Over Narrations in his career as well most notably on some of the old Burger King© commercials. His work with slam poetry is the icing on the cake with his works. To hear him read through his works is a privilege and an honor. His commands power over the room and his wit can keep you on your toes. His poems are often written as whole hearted and passionate defenses of teaching, teachers, education and students.
He takes his experiences in life and invites the reader in to savor a small slice of his life. In the poem Tony Steinberg the reader feels the pain and heartbreak at the end. His easy style creates a very vivid picture for the reader. His choice of subjects and the wonderful images he creates with his choice of words appeals to readers of all ages. His recitals reflect that of a friend relaying a story or an incident. The humor reflected in Falling in Love is like Owning a Dog is both entertaining but also food for thought in the many analogies he presents The many experiences he used as his palette create ideas that we may not have thought of in a certain light. His love and respect for education shines through and I am sure his former students remember the impression he made on them just as his poem make an impression on his audience. His poems cover such a wide variety of subjects matter they appeal to male and female young and old alike.
