Sierra DeMulder is a very well known poet in the slam scene, born in a small town in upstate New York and now living in St. Paul Minnesota. Her earliest experience with writing and spoken word came when she watched her father perform a piece at a slam poetry competition when she was fourteen years old and has been interested in and dedicated to writing ever since. She is a 27 year old success -- an honest and upfront writer who is never afraid to tell it like it is.
She is a two-time National Poetry Slam champion and has published two books of poetry, The Bones Below, published in January of 2010, and New Shoes on a Dead Horse, which came out in March of 2012. Other accomplishments of hers include winning the College union Poetry Slam Invitational in 2009, being a finalist in the Individual World Poetry Slam in 2010, and starting a teaching initiative with a slam poetry team which she coached herself and brought to third place in the College Union Poetry Slam Invitational, also in 2010.
The works and poems of Sierra DeMulder include such subjects as relationships, both family and personal, abuse, healing, gender, and identity. In her poems, she speaks from experience. She is an abuse victim, but she has conquered her demons. She has been in her fair share of bad relationships, but she has come to terms with this and weaved it seamlessly into her writing. At times, you can see her anger or frustration with the people in her life like where she imagines awarding her abuser “with the prestigious title of First Person
I Have Ever Punched In The Face” or kicking them or hitting them. It is very clear what her intention is for each poem that she writes: she wishes to relay messages, either to herself or to someone that has in some way affected her life.
Other works of hers have a sense of need for resolution, stemming from her internal struggles and her having to deal with the cards that life has thrown at her, looking for a “new coat of paint” for the metaphorical living room or making comments on scenes of “bad parenting.” DeMulder deals with the light and dark sides of life and has no problem saying what some people may deem uncouth or rude. In her writing there is a theme of hope for the future, but with the necessary amounts of dwelling on the past so that she may make sense of how she has come to be as successful as she is now. She deserves serious credit for all she has accomplished in such a short amount of time. In an area of art where you are up against people who have been in the business for as long as she has been alive, it is an incredible feat to have achieved the fame and reputation that she has, so please join me in welcoming a personal inspiration of mine, Sierra DeMulder.
